Welcome to the Out On Sunday Website/Blog

Out On Sunday
is a walking group based in the North West of England in the UK for LGBTG people and their friends. Primarily based around the Manchester area, but with members from further north into Lancashire, east into Yorkshire and members also in Cheshire and North Wales.

Walks are run usually from late January through to November each year. Fortnightly from January to May, then weekly June thru August, then back fortnightly until the end of the walking timetable in late November. Once each season, we run a walking weekend usually in June when we visit an area of the country for the weekend and enjoy the scenery and cuisine too!

The current membership of the email list stands at over 250 people from all walks of life and a wide age range too. The resulting mix makes for great social interaction on the walks, with new faces joining regulars and friendships being built through some really fun days out. Most walks feature a stop off point for food and drink. We like to emphasise the social side of the walks, unlike other groups that don't make allowances for the older members, we set out at a reasonable pace and are happy to accommodate the less fit or older walkers.

Have a look through the archives on this blog to see where we have walked and the types of walking. You will also find some photographs taken on the walks. (All photographs are published with the full permission and knowledge of those photographed.) We can't guarantee good weather, but you can be sure of good company.

So if you would like to join the mailing list please send an email to Derek by clicking here asking to be added to the Out On Sunday Mailing List. You will then receive an email prior to each walk giving full information and a contact telephone number.

Saturday 29 September: Train Trip and walk Skipton to Appleby

We had planned to organise a train trip on the Settle-Carlisle line together with a walk for early September. However after checking with the booking office, all group bookings are full for the date we were looking at so this will now take place on Saturday 29 September
The route crosses some beautiful contryside over the Pennines and the journey will be from Skipton leaving at 11.26 arriving in Appleby at 12.43. We will then arrange a shortish walk and stop for lunch and return on the 16.26 from Appleby, arriving back in Skipton at 17.41.
The cost of the journey will be £16.90 if we can get 10 full paying passengers or otherwise £18.80. For those with senior railcards it is cheper to buy a ticket at Skipton on the day but please ensure you leave plenty of time as the booking office could be busy.
If you are interested in joining us please email Phil by Friday 6 July who will then send further details re payment/meet up time etc..

Sunday 1st July: Blackstone Edge from Littleborough

A walk of 12Km / 7.5miles starting at Littleborough, up “Roman Road” to Blackstone Edge and back down via Hollingworth Lake.

A moderate walk with one fairly long incline up to the edge.  The walk covers a variety of terrain - paths, rocky tracks, peat and moorland - boots advisable, vital if wet.  No pub/shop/cafe stops en-route so bring whatever supplies you need and sufficient water as well as sunscreen and suitable clothing according to weather on the day. We will pass Dry Mere on the way down, perfect place for a paddle to cool our weary feet!

The walk will be led by Geraint

Updated list of walks

The list of walks for the second-half of 2012 has been updated (see the right-hand column)

Sunday 24th June: Daisy Nook Park

This Sunday's walk at Daisy Nook Park, led by Gilbert will be one we had planned earlier in the year but was abandoned becuase of the weather.

Pleasant walk by canal, with some inclines and declines.

Probably muddy in places, so bring boots and waterproofs.

Sunday 17th June: Hurst Green

This week's walk is a 6/7 mile one starting from the village of Hurst Green in Central Lancashire. it is predominantly an easy, flat walk along the rivers Ribble and Hodder, with a couple of steep inclines towards the end as you approach Stonyhurst College. Boots are recommended in the light of the recent weather, as it may be muddy in places. There will be a stop for lunch, but no cafe/pub en route.

The walk will be led by Patrick
